Funding Positions Through Reserves

Money allocated to bring more RCMP members to Vernon

The local police force is getting a boost.

At Monday’s meeting, Vernon city council was provided an opportunity to allocate $292,690 from the RCMP surplus to the RCMP contingency reserve, and then use those funds to bring in two new RCMP members, effective July 1.

This addition would bring the local police force up to 64 officers, six of whom were funded through reserves. However, Mayor Victor Cumming indicated during the meeting that the previous four funded through reserves had yet to join the force as of time of publication.

Council voted in favour of reallocating the funds and using the reserves to bring in more officers, and to amend the 2026-2030 Financial Plan to match that commitment.
