Vernon’s surplus totaled over $3M in 2025

The City of Vernon had a lot of savings in 2025.

The city’s financial report stated the revenue and the expenditure budgets were forecasted at over $119-million for the fiscal year.

The report said unaudited revenues were down slightly at $118.7-million as of December 31, 2025, though that was made up from expenditures which totaled at over $115.6-million, for savings totaling more than $3-million.

The savings mostly came through RCMP Contracts ($2-million under budget), Community Services ($1-million), Human Resources ($528,390), Operation Services ($454,412), and Corporate Administration ($437,965).

It was noted those savings came through factors such as RCMP officers taking leave, seasonal costs being down for things like snow plowing, and wage slippage in several departments.

It was noted that the city recorded over $61.94-million in taxation revenue in 2025, though that was over $25,000 lower than projected due to B.C. Assessment appeals.

The report added that investment were maintaining performance-to-budget expectations, but yield levels were not expected to return to 2024 levels in the short term.

Of the surplus, over $2-million would be going toward payments for the Active Living Centre in 2027, and the remainder would go into the city’s Prior Year Unexpended Balance Reserve.

The report was accepted for information by Vernon city council at the meeting Monday, March 23.
