The first provincial housing target for Vernon has almost been reached.

The provincial government ordered the City to deliver a total of 277 new homes between September 2025 and September 2026 under the housing target program.

However, with just six months past the start date of the program, a city staff report said a total of 270 new units were delivered, while 12 units were demolished, for a net total of 258 new housing units.

“A significant contribution to this progress was the completion of three multi-family development projects which accounted for 53 per cent of progress towards the first-year housing target to date,” the report stated.

“These include the purpose-built rental apartment building at 3910 Alexis Park Dr which introduced 60 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom units, for a total of 84 new homes in the community. Other notable occupancies include the completion of three purpose-built rental townhome buildings at 3903 30 St which introduced 36 one-bedroom units, and a purpose-built apartment building at 4003 34A St which introduced three studio, 16 one-bedroom, and eight two-bedroom units.”

The provincial program sees Vernon’s required new homes totals increase each year. After delivering 277 new units in the first year, the city will need to provide 573 in the second year, 915 in the third year, 1,331 in the fourth year and 1,849 in the fifth year. Those will account for nearly 5,000 new housing units built in Vernon over the five year period, with the city stating 593 of them would be affordable, below-market rentals and 124 of them would be supportive rental units.

The report will be presented to Vernon City Council for information and discussion at the regular meeting Monday, March 23.
