Petition launched to support bill allowing Canadians to buy wine across provincial borders

Canadians may soon have an easier way to order wine, craft beer and spirits from producers in other provinces, thanks to a new national petition.

The petition supports Bill C-262, introduced by Okanagan Lake West–South Kelowna MP Dan Albas. The legislation would amend the Canada Post Corporation Act to create a national framework allowing Canadians to receive Canadian alcoholic products directly from producers across provincial boundaries through Canada Post and other trusted carriers.

The initiative was launched by Ron Kubek, owner of Lightning Rock Winery in Summerland. Kubek said the legislation addresses a long-standing problem, noting it is currently easier for a B.C. winery to ship products to Texas than to Toronto.

“This issue has been years in the making,” Kubek said. “Dan Albas and I first worked on this effort back in 2019 and 2020, but it stalled when a snap federal election was called.”

Kubek said the new bill reflects months of renewed work with Albas and thanked both the MP and the Conservative caucus for supporting its introduction. Bill C-262 would maintain age verification and secure delivery standards while allowing Canadians to order wine, craft beer and spirits from producers across the country.

“Canadians should be able to buy Canadian,” Kubek said. “Instead, we have a patchwork of provincial barriers that prevent consumers from supporting wineries, breweries and distilleries in other provinces.”

The petition, e-7258, is now open on the House of Commons website, and supporters across Canada are being encouraged to sign. Kubek said the legislation is about more than wine; it’s about removing internal trade barriers and strengthening the national economy from coast to coast.
