Kelowna police are looking into a bizarre traffic incident Saturday afternoon that saw a man perched on top of a Toyota SUV in the turning lane at Highway 97 and Spall.

Stu Shears, who was riding his motorcycle nearby, told Vernon Matters he captured footage of the scene. “I was on my motorcycle. As I pulled up, the guy was already on the roof,” Shears said.

The video shows the man on the SUV roof while a bystander from a nearby truck tries to coax him down.

Shears added that the man had likely been up there before anyone arrived. “The person encouraging him to get down was from the truck behind. The driver of the Toyota probably didn’t feel comfortable (initially) engaging with him,” he added.

Shears’ footage, along with dash cam recordings, show the unusual standoff lasting several minutes before the man finally descends.

Kelowna RCMP told Vernon Matters they responded to the scene and arrested a man who was taken into custody for causing a disturbance.  He was transported to hospital for assessment.

Police said an investigation into how the male got on top of the vehicle has been opened.
