Coldest Night of the Year raised around $30K

The annual Coldest Night of the Year event was a success in supporting people at risk of homelessness.

The event saw over 160 people participate in a walk on Feb. 28, during which they raised around $30,000 for the North Okanagan Rent Bank.

The Rent Bank, run by the Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon), provides loans to people at risk of losing their housing.

“We are incredibly grateful for the strong community support for Coldest Night of the Year and housing stability. It was inspiring to see so many people wanting to ensure their neighbours and friends have a roof over their heads and are able to overcome financial emergencies that may threaten their ability to pay rent,” Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon executive director, said.

“When an unexpected expense arises, such as vehicle repairs or clothes for the kids, the North Okanagan Rent Bank plays a vital role in providing short-term, interest-free loans. It provides families and individuals, including many seniors, with much-needed resources while not having to worry about eviction.”

CMHA Vernon said it was still looking for support for the North Okanagan Rent Bank, and that donations can be made online.

The rent bank supports people in Vernon, Coldstream, Armstrong, Spallumcheen, Lumby, Enderby, Grinrod and Cherryville.
