IIO investigates after driver shot by RCMP in Glenmore

We are learning more about a police incident involving a black Mercedes in Glenmore last week.

It turns out police shot at the vehicle on Snowsell Street North after the driver took off at a traffic stop.

An officer suffered minor injuries while being dragged by the vehicle.

Police found the vehicle the next day, and then the driver at a separate residence who had suffered non-life threatening gunshots wounds.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating to determine if police did anything wrong.

The shooting happened Thursday Feb. 26 at around 10:30 p.m.

A media statement from the IIO said there are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:

If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and

If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
