Coldstream looking to address farm property tax discrepancies
The District of Coldstream is proposing a change to how agricultural properties are taxed.
The municipality said all farm properties fall under the same Class 9 tax classification, whether they are small-scale, light-impact, or large-scale, intensive industrial farm operations.
Coldstream suggests the Ministry of Finance create a farm-use property subclass to distinguish between these, as larger farms require more infrastructure and services and should be taxed accordingly.
The recommendation to have the farm property tax discrepancy addressed will be brought forward by Coldstream for discussion at the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) convention. If supported there, it will be brought forward again at the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ conference for further debate.
