A fire in Yankee Flats claimed the lives of two people.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District said the Silver Creek and Falkland Fire Departments responded to a fire at a recreational vehicle in the Yankee Flats area of Electoral Area D at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

Crews arrived on the scene and found the RV with modified and constructed add-ons fully engulfed in flames, and firefighters were able to contain the blaze to just the one structure.

After the blaze was extinguished firefighters gained entry and discovered the remains of the RV’s two residents.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of these two people,” Columbia Shuswap Regional Fire Chief, Sean Coubrough, said.

“The hearts of all our firefighters go out to their family and friends. They are in our thoughts, and we share in their grief.”

The cause of the fire was being investigated with support of the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the B.C. Coroners Service, and the CSRD said it was also providing mental health supports to the firefighters who responded to this call.
