Mild Winter Allowed Work to Resume

Progress has been made on the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail

The mild winter weather has allowed some big progress to be made on the construction of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail.

A joint release from the Regional District of North Okanagan and Columbia Shuswap Regional District said the mild weather allowed work to resume on the trail that spans from Armstrong to Sicamous.

Since December, crews have been able to raise a section of rail bed south of Rosemond Lake to reduce flood risk; graded and surfaced the corridor between kilometres 15 and 32 north of Enderby; and worked with area farm owners to incorporate existing vehicle and waterline crossings into the trail.

The Regional Districts said work was also underway to repair and deck three rail bridges along the corridor using reclaimed wood from the former Baxter Bridge at Ashton Creek.

Major erosion repair work for the Mara Lake section of the trail is planned to go in February, pending permit approvals. If those are not granted on time then the work will be done in August, as that will be the next low-water window needed for the work.

Final compaction of the trail surface is scheduled for March.

The RDNO and CSRD remind people that public access is not permitted in the active construction area, though noted many other sections of the trail were open for public use.
