North Glenmore area studied for potential long-term Kelowna expansion

A report to Kelowna City Council suggests up to 9,000 more homes could be built in the North Glenmore area over the next 30 years. As many as 16,000 homes could be needed over a 50-year period.

The study is an exploratory step to understand how growth could extend beyond the city’s growth boundary, if needed, over the next half century.

The North Glenmore Sector is a 1,600 hectare area from Quail Ridge and Glenmore Landfill in the south, to Lake Country in the north.

The study has mapped the land and identified environmentally sensitive areas, and explored early growth concepts for homes and parks.

The next phases of study will look at future road connections, transit potential, water and sewer needs, and costs.

The report said, in part, it aims to better understand the opportunities for future growth in that area (such as housing, employment, and community services), should growth beyond the current city boundary be needed.

The North Glenmore Sector was selected as the preferred location for this study due to its location between Kelowna’s urban neighbourhoods and growth underway in Lake Country, the proportion of properties that lie outside of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), and its proximity to growing employment in the Gateway District, including Kelowna International Airport and UBCO.
