Climate Resiliency, Adaptation Project Delivery

City of Vernon advocating Youth Climate Corps B.C. be national delivery partner

The local government is voicing its support for a provincial program to act as a delivery partner in a larger climate and green program.

The City of Vernon has agreed to support the Youth Climate Corps B.C. (YCCBC) as the delivery partner for a National Youth Climate Corps.

The YCCBC sees young people participate in hands-on climate resilience, conservation and community-based adaptation projects, which benefit both the young adults and the community at large, and is the only organization in Canada that has done these kinds of projects while partnered with provincial, local and First Nations governments.

The federal government has committed $40-million to support a national Youth Climate Corps, and the City of Vernon has called for the YCCBC to be the delivery partner in that investment.

“As the Government of Canada develops a national Youth Climate Corps program, we strongly encourage you to draw on proven, community-embedded models that have demonstrated success here in British Columbia. Youth Climate Corps B.C. has the infrastructure, experience, and partnerships necessary to effectively deliver a national program that meets federal objectives while remaining responsive to the needs of local communities,” Mayor Victor Cumming said in a letter on behalf of the City of Vernon.

“For these reasons, we respectfully ask that the Government of Canada select Youth Climate Corps BC as the delivery organization for the national Youth Climate Corps program.”

The matter of having the mayor send the letter to Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, was supported by Vernon City Council at the January 12 meeting.
