Deaths outpaced births locally in 2025

The local health areas saw the number of deaths far outnumber the number of births last year.

Preliminary figures released from Vital Statistics said there were 743 deaths recorded in the Vernon Centre/Coldstream health area in 2025.

That was significantly higher than the 414 births recorded in the same area during the same 12 months.

The trend of deaths outpacing births in 2025 was also seen in the majority of the other local health areas:

The provincial figures were relatively similar to each other in 2025.

The data collection agency said there were 43,223 deaths recorded across B.C. in 2025, compared to 43,179 births.

The figures provided by Vital Statistics were preliminary and subject to change pending further reviews.
