Greater Vernon saw housing construction slow in 2025.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were a total of 219 housing starts recorded locally last year.

That was down from the 265 starts recorded the year before.

CMHC said the projects in 2025 included 13 started in December. Those involved six semi-detached homes, four single houses, and three apartments. December’s figures were also up from the seven starts recorded in the same month the year before.

Kelowna also had a similar end to the year, recording a total of 2,600 starts throughout 2025, including 72 in December. The annual total was down from 2024’s figures, but the most recent December did see an uptick compared to the same month the year before.

Meanwhile, B.C. saw housing construction slow somewhat, but that wasn’t the case for Canada as a whole.

CMHC said there were 3,805 housing starts in B.C. this past December, bringing the annual total up to 41,707 starts. The previous December did see 3,743 housing project starts, but 2024 in its entirety recorded 43,575 starts in B.C.

Canada as a whole recorded 20,716 housing starts in December, and a total of 241,173 projects started through 2025. Those were both up compared to 2024, as that December saw 16,531 housing starts and the entire year saw a total of 227,237.
