Kelowna RCMP launch gang enforcement team pilot
Kelowna RCMP have launched a new pilot project aimed at tackling organized crime and the local drug trade.
The Kelowna Gang Enforcement Team is a four-member unit drawn from various RCMP sections. It focuses on removing firearms, weapons, and illicit drugs from city streets, targeting individuals involved in distribution that contribute to social disorder, property crime, and public safety concerns.
Since beginning operations on Jan. 6, the team has already been involved in multiple enforcement actions. A recent vehicle stop on Jan. 8 led to two arrests for outstanding warrants, the seizure of three firearms, and the confiscation of illicit drugs.
Sergeant Scott Powrie of the Crime Reduction Unit said organized crime and the drug trade affect every part of the community.
