Localized Flood Risks

High Streamflow Advisory issued for the Okanagan

Dec 10, 2025 | 10:20 AM

Recent and upcoming weather patterns could cause water levels to rise in the local rivers and streams.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Okanagan and other parts of the Southern Interior.

The advisory comes as a series of atmospheric rivers have brought rainfall to the region, which is expected to continue through the coming days.

Additionally, the short-term weather forecast calls for rising temperatures, which could cause snow to melt and drain into local waterways.

“Rivers are expected to rise on Wednesday (Dec. 10) in response to rainfall and snowmelt,” the B.C. River Forecast Centre said.

“Current hydrologic modelling is forecasting higher flows around the Okanagan, Boundary and Kootenay region. Significant flood hazard is not expected, however localized high flows, particularly in lower elevation creeks and smaller watersheds is possible.”

Though no significant flooding is expected due to this weather pattern, the heavy rain and high streamflows do pose a risk of increased unstable banks, river erosions, submerged roads, swift water hazards, flooding and landslides.

“Stay clear of the banks of swift running rivers and never drive across flooded roads, bridges or river crossings,” the agency said.

“At this time of year leaves can clog storm drains and impact urban drainage. Keep storm drains clear.”

The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship and the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Resilience also recommends that people take steps to protect their homes from flooding events by clearing perimeter drains and gutters, and by stocking up on sandbags. People were also advised to have a grab-and-go bag packed with essential items and documents in case a major flood does occur and they have to leave their home.
