VSAR rescued lost snowmobilers in first call of the winter

Dec 2, 2025 | 10:39 AM

Vernon Search and Rescue took their sleds out for their first winter rescue of the season Sunday.

In a social media post, the search and resuce group (VSAR) said a couple of snowmobilers had gone for a ride up Hunters Range but got turned around.

“They accessed the area using a trail that wasn’t marked and wasn’t maintained, and not being familiar with the area, they had trouble finding their trail back out,” VSAR said in the post.

The snowmobilers did manage to come across one of the Hunters Range Snowmobile Association’s cabins, where they built a fire to thaw themselves and their phones out before placing a call for help.

VSAR responded with five members on sleds, who took a marked path to the cabin where they found the lost riders waiting for them. The search and rescue group thanker the lost sledders for staying in place after making the call for help, as it led to a swift and efficient rescue.

VSAR recommended people recreating in the back country carry essential items like portable battery packs, a satellite communicator, and a GPS.

The search and rescue group added that the snowpack remains very low, and advises people be careful of creeks, lakes, holes, stumps and and more when going off trail.
