West Kelowna crews ready streets for winter weather
With snow and icy conditions expected, City of West Kelowna crews and contractor AEL are ready to hit the streets.
City crews will apply brine to designated roads before snowfall and maintain streets according to the Roads Priority System, which focuses on keeping the busiest routes passable for emergency services, BC Transit and essential supply chains. The system covers more than 260 kilometres of city streets. Residents can view the full priority map and learn more at westkelownacity.ca/snow.
Priority 1 roads include arterial corridors and steep collector routes, such as Anders, Boucherie, Hudson, Mission Hill, Bartley, East Boundary, Glenrosa and Westlake. Priority 2 covers collector roads, steep neighbourhood entrances, urban centres and school zones, including Auburn, Dunbarton, Elliott, Gates, Glencoe, McQueen, Shannon Ridge and Yorkton. Priority 3 addresses steeper side streets, cul-de-sacs and rural routes, which are cleared within 48 hours after snow stops falling.
City officials ask residents to help crews by parking off-street for up to 48 hours, clearing sidewalks, keeping streets free of piled snow and ensuring fire hydrants and storm drains remain accessible. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, maintain extra distance and keep headlights on in winter conditions.
