Kelowna council set to endorse transit-supportive housing plan
Kelowna city council is expected to approve a pilot project aimed at speeding up housing development along major transit corridors.
The Transit Supportive Corridor Pilot Project would pre-zone select areas to allow residential and mixed-use development without the need for individual rezoning applications.
The initiative is part of the city’s Housing Accelerator Fund program, which received up to $31.5 million from the federal government in 2023 to boost the supply of new housing. By pre-zoning properties along transit-supportive corridors, the city hopes to reduce delays, provide greater certainty for developers, and make it easier to plan utilities and infrastructure.
Staff said the pilot project received limited public feedback after 2,900 letters were sent to property owners in the affected areas. City officials say the plan will help create more transit-accessible housing, improve public spaces, and provide better transportation options.
