Big White opening delayed

There’s a delay to ski operations at Big White Resort due to a lack of snow.

It was hoped to open Thursday this week but the resort has announced early-season snowfall has not reached the level needed to prepare terrain or operate lifts safely.

Based on the current forecast, the resort anticipates making its next meaningful assessment on Monday, December 1, at the earliest unless conditions shift more quickly.

In a media release Monday, the resort said, at this stage, approximately 50 cm of snow is needed to open runs and begin spinning lifts safely. Once that snow arrives, all available resources will be out on the mountain to capture, groom, and pack new snow as quickly as possible.

Big White is monitoring weather patterns closely. Based on the current forecast, the resort anticipates making its next meaningful assessment on Monday, December 1, at the earliest unless conditions shift more quickly. The resort will provide 48 hours’ notice prior to opening whenever possible.

While the mountain terrain remains closed, the resort village continues to offer seasonal activities. The Welcome to Winter annual Christmas light-up event will go ahead as scheduled on Saturday, November 29. Guests are invited to visit, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and pick up their season passes before the busy stretch begins. Retail shops and restaurants will be open, with updated hours available on the resort website. All opening day updates will be posted online.
