West K commemorative parks: a shift away from naming after individuals
How to name commemorative parks and civic spaces in West Kelowna without ruffling some people’s feathers?
That’s the goal of a new naming policy and public input process the city is trying to formulate.
During Tuesday’s council meeting staff reported there is a growing shift away from naming spaces after individuals as that can cause political polarization or community division.
The priority now is for names that celebrate history, geography, and shared community experiences, and ensures that names are inclusive, meaningful, and have greater social and political longevity.
