RDCO celebrates strong community response to pop-up recycling depots
The Regional District of Central Okanagan says its 2025 pop-up recycling depots in Lake Country and Peachland wrapped up another successful season.
A total of 2,570 households took part in 16 pop-up events, diverting more than 13.6 tonnes of recyclable materials from the landfill. The depots made it easier for residents to recycle items not accepted in curbside bins, such as flexible plastics, foam packaging and glass containers.
“These pop-up events have proven to be a popular service for the two communities, and we are thrilled with the response we have had,” said Cynthia Coates, supervisor of solid waste with the RDCO. “The success of these events highlights the importance of providing accessible, convenient recycling options for residents.”
Each community offered prize draws to boost participation. Peachland handed out $50 gift cards to local businesses, while Lake Country offered gift cards, recycling bins and a backyard composter, along with a grand prize e-bike. Dorothy Lawrence of Lake Country took home the e-bike, saying she was “delighted to win” and encouraged others to use the pop-up depots for harder-to-recycle materials.
