Kelowna named Canada’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy
Kelowna has been named Canada’s first ‘UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy’, joining a global network that includes San Antonio, Texas, and Mérida, Mexico.
“This recognition confirms what those in the Okanagan Valley have known for decades — Kelowna is a world-class centre for agriculture, culinary arts, and beverages,” Mayor Tom Dyas said in a statement. “It’s yet another reason for visitors to come to Kelowna and sample the flavours of the Okanagan Valley for themselves.”
Gastronomy is described as the art of selecting, preparing, serving, and enjoying fine food. It is grounded in relationships between food, culture, and tradition.
City officials said gastronomy is at the heart of Kelowna’s economy, drawing more than two million visitors each year and generating more than $1 billion in tourism revenue. The city is also home to over 500 restaurants and a thriving agriculture sector that supports thousands of jobs.
