Okanagan still very dry, poses risk of multi-year drought effects

The Okanagan’s drought rating is still high heading into the middle of fall, and that does not bode well for the coming seasons.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre said the region was at Drought Level 2 as of Thursday, Oct. 30. That was down from the Level 3 or 4 ratings recorded over previous weeks, but still indicated that conditions are drier than normal.
The agency said the Interior could see some precipitation spillover on the weekend and into the next week as the storm systems hit the coast. It warned that the Okanagan and other areas with “persistent precipitation deficits may enter the winter without sufficient recovery, increasing the risk of multi-year drought effects.”
It also stated that low streamflows continued to put salmon stocks in the Interior at risk as the winter approaches.
