Four psychiatrists resign from Vernon’s Jubilee Hospital
Four psychiatrists have resigned from their acute care and on-call roles at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, adding to growing worries about health care in the Interior.
The opposition BC Conservative Party called it a warning about the ongoing fragility of the province’s healthcare system, saying the doctors quit because of overwhelming workload and lack of support. Interior Health said the resignations were for separate and unrelated personal reasons.
“Interior Health is in meltdown and this government is trying to spin it away,” Kristina Loewen, MLA for Kelowna-Centre, said, in part, in a media release Thursday evening. “First pediatricians in Kelowna, then OB-GYNs in Kamloops, [seven of whom resigned], and now psychiatrists in Vernon. Families are losing access to care, frontline workers are burning out, and the Minister of Health is still pretending it’s all under control.”
The party called for immediate intervention to stabilize Interior Health, including emergency recruitment measures, mental health supports for healthcare workers, and an independent review of management and oversight within the health authority.
