Prescribed burn planned near Peachland as Munro Lake Wildfire areas reopen
A 40 hectare prescribed burn is planned southwest of Peachland as part of the multi-year Munro prescribed burn project.
The BC Wildfire Service, Penticton Indian Band and Okanagan Nation Alliance will carry out the burn with support from Gorman Brothers Ltd., the Okanagan Shuswap Resource District and Westbank First Nation. Flames and smoke may be visible from Peachland, Summerland, Kelowna, Penticton, Naramata and nearby areas, as well as to travellers along Highways 97 and 97C.
The burn is aimed at reducing wildfire risk, restoring ecosystems including mule deer winter range, and supporting Indigenous cultural practices. Preparation work could begin as early as October 6 and continue until November 30, with ignition happening only under safe weather and venting conditions.
Meanwhile, the final property under Evacuation Order for the Munro Lake Wildfire will be reopened Monday at 12 p.m., including the ZipZone Adventure Park. The wildfire is under control and not expected to spread beyond its current perimeter. BC Wildfire crews remain on-site supporting mop-up and fire suppression.
