Kelowna council to receive update on transportation safety

Oct 3, 2025 | 10:38 AM

Kelowna council will receive a report Monday on transportation safety, outlining collision trends, planned road upgrades, and police enforcement initiatives.

The report from the Integrated Transportation Department reviews current programs and capital projects aimed at reducing injuries on city streets. While injury crashes have declined in recent years, more than half of the most serious incidents involve people walking, cycling, or using mobility devices.

City staff highlight the Safe Mobility Action Plan, building on the 2040 Transportation Master Plan, which uses a Vision Zero approach to eliminate transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries. The plan draws on multi-year collision data and input from residents, community partners, and policing services to identify high-risk locations and guide future safety investments.

Recent projects include upgraded intersections, new crosswalks with flashers and refuge islands, expanded bike lanes, and improvements to sidewalks and local streets. Staff say these measures, along with proactive enforcement and partnerships with ICBC, aim to protect vulnerable road users and create safer, more predictable conditions for all.
