FortisBC ramps up Kelowna substation to meet soaring electricity demand

FortisBC is investing $18.6 million to upgrade its Saucier Substation, increasing capacity for downtown and south-central Kelowna, including Kelowna General Hospital. The project will add a second transformer, expand the control building, replace switchgear and breakers, and create a new entrance on Richter Street. Work is expected to finish by the end of 2027.

“FortisBC is committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable energy,” said Marko Aaltomaa, director of engineering and project management. “These investments help meet growing electricity needs and support community and economic growth.”

The City of Kelowna welcomed the upgrade. “We appreciate FortisBC’s investment and look forward to collaboration on infrastructure initiatives in the city’s fastest-growing areas,” said Ryan Smith, divisional director of planning and development services.

Demand has been rising due to population growth, increased housing density, and the adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps. FortisBC has added more than 10,000 new customers in Kelowna over the past five years.

The Saucier upgrade is part of a wider plan across B.C.’s Southern Interior. The company has recently upgraded or built substations in Grand Forks, Salmo, South Slocan, Beaver Park, Fruitvale, and Trail, and will spend $133 million by 2027 on additional upgrades in Kelowna, Kaleden, Keremeos, and Christina Lake, along with transmission line improvements. FortisBC is also seeking new wind energy projects and will file a long-term electricity plan with the B.C. Utilities Commission in 2026.

More information on the Saucier Substation upgrade is available on FortisBC’s website.
