Campfire Bans Rescinded

North Okanagan campfire bans lifted Monday

People living in the North Okanagan can once again have campfires on their properties.

The City of Vernon, District of Coldstream, City of Enderby and Shuswap River Fire Protection District, and the Regional District of North Okanagan lifted thes ban on campfires within the municipal and regional boundaries at 12 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29.

The local bans were lifted in alignment with the BC Wildfire Service lifting the ban across the Kamloops Fire Centre Monday.

Though campfires are permitted within the Vernon and the RDNO, people were reminded to be cautious with the fires and to follow some key guidelines.

  • Only have campfires on private properties, not at beaches or parks
  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Fully extinguish a fire before leaving it
  • Keep fires small and contained
  • Do not have fires near buildings, sheds, dry grass, or other flammable materials or items
  • Only burn dry, seasoned wood
  • Be considerate of neighbours and avoid burning materials that create dense smoke or unpleasant odours
  • Always have water or a hand tool at hand while the fire is burning
  • Ensure the fie dows not exceed 1.5 feet high and 1.5 feet wide

The ban on Category 2 and Category 3 Open Fires remained in place Monday. That also included restrictions on the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, and burn barrels and cages.
