Bernard avenue pedestrian initiative set to wrap up, street reopens Thursday
Following its final full weekend, the annual “Meet Me on Bernard” pedestrian zone is set to reopen to vehicle traffic on Thursday.
The car-free stretch, running from Abbott Street to Pandosy Street, allowed downtown visitors to enjoy expanded patios, additional seating, and public art throughout the summer months. The program provided a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere in the heart of Kelowna’s downtown.
City officials made adjustments late last month after an incident involving a driver navigating through the restricted area. Temporary gates were added at both ends of the corridor, and extra staff were scheduled during peak evening hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to maintain safety.
These measures aimed to ensure pedestrians and local business staff could enjoy the space securely while keeping the downtown experience lively.
