Not a good start.

Almost 60 speeding tickets were issued in the first week of the new school year.

The Kelowna Municipal Traffic Unit and the RCMP Speed Watch program have been on location in several school zone areas. One driver was caught going nearly 40 km/h over the posted speed limit while also using a cellphone.

In a press release, the RCMP said officers have been actively monitoring traffic since classes resumed Tuesday. Over two days, the Speed Watch program checked more than 600 vehicles, finding 15 per cent exceeding the posted 30 km/h limit, including two drivers recorded at 41 km/h over the speed limit.

Cpl. Allison Konsmo, media relations officer with Kelowna RCMP, said police will continue to be out in full force.

“The first week back is always one of the busiest times, and drivers are urged to slow down and stay alert, especially during pick-up and drop-off times,” she said.

School zones in Kelowna are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, with a speed limit of 30 km/h.
