Kelowna MLA Dew calls for youth jobs plan as unemployment rises
Unemployment is climbing in Kelowna as new Statistics Canada data show British Columbia’s jobless rate rising to 6.2 per cent, with 16,000 positions lost last month. Young people are being hit hardest, with nearly 13 per cent of those aged 15 to 24 out of work and young women facing the highest rates at 14.4 per cent.
Conservative Official Opposition critic for jobs, economic development and innovation Gavin Dew said the figures highlight an urgent need for a youth employment strategy. He also raised concerns about small businesses in Kelowna’s downtown, which are struggling amid vandalism, violence and safety issues.
Dew said a first summer job can shape a young person’s career and outlook, and warned the province cannot afford to lose a generation of workers. He called for a comprehensive plan to address youth unemployment and strengthen the local economy.
