BC Highway Patrol seeks witnesses on one-year anniversary of Merritt pedestrian death
The family of a 24-year-old man killed on the Coquihalla Highway is asking the public for information as the one-year anniversary of his death approaches.
Buddy Rhodes was found off the side of Highway 5 near Exit 286 in Merritt on August 30, 2024. A collision reconstruction suggests he was struck by a southbound vehicle while standing or walking along the highway. Rhodes was not discovered for up to six days, and the driver involved has not been located.
In a video released this week, Rhodes’ sister, Alix Legouffe, described the impact of his death on her family and made a direct appeal for witnesses. “If you know something and you have not told someone, please come forward. Our family needs closure and answers,” she said.
Corporal Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol said investigators are open to hearing from anyone who may have information, including the driver who may not have realized they struck Rhodes. He urged anyone with details to contact the Merritt detachment at 250-378-4262, quoting file 2024-4262.
