Watermain flushing expands in West Kelowna

The City of West Kelowna is expanding its annual watermain flushing program into more areas of the Lakeview Heights neighbourhood.

Crews have been working in Zone RV03B of the Rose Valley Water Service Area and will now move into Zones RV03C and RV03D beginning Thursday. The city said an isolated, precautionary water quality advisory will remain in place for those zones until further notice.

Watermain flushing involves forcing high-velocity water through hydrants to remove sediment that has built up in the system over time. During the process, residents may notice reduced water pressure or increased turbidity, though the disruption is expected to be temporary.

The city advises residents not to drink discoloured water. Instead, they should run a cold tap for several minutes until the water clears, and call 778-797-2246 if it does not clear after 10 minutes.

As part of the work, the city is also offering an alternate source of potable water at the bulk filling station at Shannon Lake and Asquith roads. Residents are asked to bring clean bottles for filling.

The flushing program is scheduled to continue on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with some evening or weekend work possible. Updates on street locations and zone progress will be posted to the city’s website and social media channels.

The city said flushing is a best practices maintenance program that helps remove manganese and other sediment that may have settled in the distribution system over decades. Parents with infants are advised not to use tap water to mix formula while flushing is underway in their zone.
