Breaking Down Barriers

Vernon endorses Regional Accessibility Plan, work underway to include key points in the OCP

The City of Vernon has committed to breaking down barriers and making the community more accessible.

At the regular meeting Monday, August 11, Vernon City Council voted unanimously in favour of endorsing the Regional Accessibility Plan.

The plan lays out key ways that municipalities in the North Okanagan can make their communities more accommodating and accessible to all people .

Upon endorsing the report, Councillor Brian Guy brought forward an idea to incorporate the key priorities in the Regional Accessibility Plan within the new Official Community Plan (OCP) that is being developed.

However, city staff informed council that the new OCP will already include the recommendations in the plan, as it is incorporating Vernon’s Age and Dementia Friendly Community Plan, and that those two documents mirror one another in their priorities and recommendations.

Municipalities that endorse the Regional Accessibility Plan will be in charge of doing the work within their own community, though can access some support through the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the intermunicipal group that developed the plan.
