Kelowna Rockets hire Josh Gorges as assistant coach

The Kelowna Rockets have brought back former captain and NHL veteran Josh Gorges as an assistant coach for the 2025–26 WHL season.

Gorges, who grew up in Kelowna, played for the Rockets from 2000 to 2004, serving as captain in his final season. He helped lead the team to a WHL championship in 2003 and a Memorial Cup title the following year.

After his junior career, Gorges played more than 750 games in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres. Known for his leadership and defensive play, he often wore a letter during his time in the league.

“Josh brings a championship pedigree, NHL experience, and deep ties to this city and our organization,” said Rockets president and general manager Bruce Hamilton in a news release. “He’s lived the Kelowna Rockets standard and understands what it takes to win here. We’re thrilled to bring him back in this new role.”

Since retiring in 2018, Gorges has been involved in player development and coaching with the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors, most recently serving as an assistant coach.

He joins a staff led by head coach Derrick Martin, associate coach Don Hay and assistant coach Brandon McMillan. The Rockets open training camp in late August as they prepare to host the 2026 Memorial Cup.
