Vernon’s rec rental fees to increase in the coming years

The City of Vernon will be increasing the rates for renting recreational facilities and parks in the next three years.

Starting in 2026, the rental rates for recreational facilities will be increasing by 2.5 per cent. That increase will also be repeated in 2027 and 2028.

Additionally, the facility enhancement fees will be increasing over those years. Vernon residents renting out the parks and rec facilities will see their enhancement fees go up by two per cent annually, while the fees for non-residents will increase by four per cent.

The current funding structure of having taxation cover 35 per cent of the recreation budget and 81 per cent of the parks funding requirement will be maintained over those years.

Council voted unanimously in favour of the changes to the Parks and Rec Rental Fees and Charges at the regular meeting Monday, August 11, which the mayor said will help take the pressure off the general public.

“It’s basic costs, and if we don’t [increase the rental fees] then we would have to raise taxes,” Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters following Monday’s meeting.

“It’s just keeping that balance, and keeping the levels quite modest really helps those who are renting but keeps it in like with what the costs are.”

The changes to the fee structure will be seen for renting facilities for events, such as Creative Chaos, Vernon ComicCon, Vernon Farmers’ Markets, and the like, and will not directly impact the user fees.
