Vernon, Lake Country commit to work together during emergencies

A new partnership has been formed to strengthen local response to wildfires and other emergencies.

The City of Vernon and the District of Lake Country have formalized a mutual aid agreement between their respective fire departments to enhance emergency response capacity in the region.

The agreement will see both Vernon Fire Rescue Services and the Lake Country Fire Department provide personnel, equipment, and resources to one another during large-scale emergencies or when additional support is needed.

“This agreement formalizes the collaboration that has existed for years between our departments,” said Vernon Fire Chief David Lind.

“It enhances our ability to share resources, improve coordination, and ensure effective response when it matters most. Whether it’s a large-scale emergency or a complex incident, this framework helps us better protect both communities.”

This agreement will cement the relationship between the two communities and the collaborative efforts made to respond to complex incidents.

“In 2023, Vernon Fire Rescue Services was among the first to support the Lake Country Fire Department during the initial response to the Clarke Creek Wildfire,” explained Lake Country Fire Chief Darren Lee.

“In 2024, our departments once again joined forces to battle multiple wildfires sparked by a lightning storm that impacted both Carr’s Landing and Predator Ridge. These back-to-back responses highlight the strength and reliability of our partnership and the critical role it plays in protecting our communities.”

The agreement will see the two fire departments be able to pool resources and expertise, support one another during times of high call volume or staff shortages, and better manage incidents, including wildfires, structure fires, and rescue operations.

The two municipal fire departments have also agreed to participate in joint training opportunities, share knowledge between the departments, and collaborate on emergency planning.
