Okanagan sizzles as temperatures near historic highs

Jul 30, 2025 | 9:35 AM

The Central Okanagan is facing another blast of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to come close to breaking long-standing records Tuesday.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the region, with Kelowna’s forecast to reach 36 C. That puts the city just shy of its July 30 record of 38.1 C, set back in 2003.

In Vernon, the record high for the date is 37.5 C. While official records are less specific for nearby Lake Country and Peachland, historical data suggests those communities typically trail only slightly behind the larger centres.

The humidex is expected to push conditions closer to 38, amplifying the heat and increasing the risk of heat-related illness. A slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms is also in the forecast, with winds shifting northwest at 20 km/h.

While it appears the region may fall just short of setting new all-time marks, forecasters say the margin will be narrow.

Environment Canada is reminding residents to take precautions against the heat — including staying hydrated, checking on vulnerable neighbours and limiting outdoor activity during peak temperatures.
