The renovations at Pat Duke Memorial Arena have crossed the finish line.

The Regional District of North Okanagan said the roof replacement and upgrades at the arena in Lumby are complete.

First built in 1967, the arena was in need of upgrades to address critical structural issues and to ensure the facility could continue to be used for minor hockey, figure skating, recreation skating, and other community events for generations to come.

Along with extending the facility’s lifespan, the upgrades should reduce maintenance costs and improve energy efficiency, with the hope of having fewer disruptions to programming in the near future.

“The Pat Duke Memorial Arena is more than just a rink—it’s a gathering place, a training ground, and a hub of community life,” stated Rick Fairbairn, Chair of the RDNO White Valley Parks, Recreation, and Culture Committee.

“These upgrades ensure that it remains a vibrant and accessible space for all residents, now and into the future.”

The work at the arena was made possible thanks to an $800,000 contribution from the Canada Community Building Fund, $750,000 from B.C.’s Growing Communities Fund, and additional contributions from RDNO reserves.

“Investing in infrastructure like this is about more than bricks and mortar- it’s about supporting the health, connection, and vibrancy of our communities,” Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, said.

“These upgrades reflect our commitment to building strong, resilient communities. This is another way our government is investing to improve the lives of British Columbians.”

The RDNO also partnered with the Lumby Men’s Shed to design and build a new wooden sign for the arena, which is intended to symbolize local pride and volunteerism.
