The fire that destroyed a house overlooking Kalamalka Lake was potentially fatal.

Firefighters were dispatched to Kalview Drive around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said after the fire was extinguished, firefighters conducted an initial investigation, which led to the discovery of suspected human remains in the home.

One occupant of the house was unaccounted for and was believed to have been inside the home and unable to escape the fire.

The B.C. Coroners Service has been notified and will be assisting in the investigation.

“Given the conditions at the scene, confirming the potential remains and determining the circumstances surrounding the fire will take some time,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“We’re still very early in our investigation and right now our priority is to ensure the safety of those examining the site and preserving any potential evidence. The scene will be secured until a more detailed examination can take place.”

The RCMP added more information will be released once available.
