Tenant rights strengthened

West Kelowna looking to protect renters

Jul 21, 2025 | 6:00 AM

People renting in West Kelowna might soon get more help if their homes are torn down for new buildings.

City council will discuss new rules on Tuesday to make sure renters and people living in mobile home parks are treated fairly when their homes are redeveloped. This comes after a fight between tenants at Shady Acres Mobile Home Park and a developer.

Right now, tenants only have limited protection under current laws, and council says that’s not enough—especially with more buildings expected to be torn down in the future.

Over the last two years, 40 homes have been affected. In the next 20 years, that number could jump to 300.

The new plan would require developers to help tenants move, give them money, and offer a chance to move back into the new place when it’s built.

Renters could get $1,000 to $1,500 for moving, plus free rent or money equal to 3 to 6 months’ rent. People who own mobile homes could get a payout based on the value of their home or help buying a unit in the new development.

Developers would have to cover all the costs.
