Potential hike

Kelowna council to review proposed transit fare hike

Jul 17, 2025 | 9:38 AM

Kelowna city council will take a closer look Monday at a proposal that could see transit fares rise for the first time in several years.

The suggested changes would increase the cost of bus passes and cash fares across the Kelowna Regional Transit System. City staff said the review comes as transit operations face growing financial pressure from inflation and higher service demands.

Under the proposal, adult cash fares would go up by .50 cents, while monthly passes and discounted fare programs would also see increases. The plan also outlines a phased increase to U-PASS rates for students at UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College.

City staff said fares have stayed the same since 2018, despite rising expenses for fuel, equipment and wages. If the recommendations are approved, the new rates could take effect as early as this fall.
