43rd Ave. corridor project comes with $4.6M price tag

The City of Vernon is planning an infrastructure project with a multi-million dollar cost.

The 43rd Avenue Corridor Improvement Project will see a roundabout installed at the intersection with Alexis Park Drive, Old Kamloops Road and 43rd Avenue; creating a multi-use path along 43rd Ave.; shallow utility restoration an relocation; the installation of new curbs, gutters, and associated drainage, sanitary and water works; and installing new street lighting, including pedestrian crossing flashers.

A city staff report said the work was estimated to cost $4,630,000, and be funded by Communities Works Funding ($3,024,000), Sanitary Sewer Reserves ($310,000), and Roads Development Cost Charge Reserves ($1,296,000).

The multi-use path will be located on the south side of 43rd Ave. to minimize traffic impacts, and grant access to the school and surrounding neighbourhood. There will be a light-controlled crosswalk for people to use to get to and from the Active Living Centre via the pathway.

Council did inquire about possible traffic congestion issues the project would cause, but city staff said a traffic impact study was done and determined it would not cause any major issues.

The City of Vernon wants to have this project done in line with the Active Living Centre, which is scheduled to be built and open tot he public in the fall of 2026

To meet that timeline, Vernon City Council agreed to grant early budget approval for the project at the meeting Monday, July 14. This will allow it to go to procurement, which could help avoid any increased construction costs.

Council also endorsed the expenditure of $900,000 of Community Works Funding and $310,000 of Sanitary Sewer Reserves in 2025 from within the project’s overall budget to get the work started as soon as possible.
