Water trough for cattle, wildfire mitigation proposed at local park
A new feature to the Coldstream Ranchlands Park is being considered to support cattle grazing and wildfire risk reduction.
The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC) was presented with a plan to install a water trough at the property, with the goal of supporting an extended grazing window for cattle that will be passing through the park twice annually. The Regional District of North Okanagan staff report said the new extended grazing period would also help in reducing fine fuels in the area and decrease the risk of wildfires at the park.
The trough would be near the centre of the park to reduce potential conflicts between agricultural and recreational park uses, and would require an electric pump for the water conveyance.
The report stated the most cost effective solution would be to use an existing underground conduit from the Ravine Drive pump station for the new pump. That would require a new electrical kiosk, transformer and panel to be installed next to the station to provide independent power supply at an estimated cost of $120,000.
