FortisBC calls for new wind energy to boost power supply in Kelowna area

Jul 3, 2025 | 12:27 PM

FortisBC is planning a new call for wind power projects later this year to help meet growing electricity demand in the Okanagan and surrounding areas.

The utility said the focus will be on projects that can supply power during the winter months, when usage is highest. Only companies selected through a 2024 request for expressions of interest will be invited to take part.

“To keep up with growth in the Southern Interior, especially in places like Kelowna, we need more local power,” said Joe Mazza, FortisBC’s vice-president of energy supply and resource development. “This is about building a reliable, affordable energy future.”

Projects must include at least 25 per cent Indigenous ownership and show plans for long-term community involvement.

The company says it’s also upgrading local infrastructure, including substations in Glenmore, Saucier and Duck Lake. Those projects are part of a broader $133-million investment approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission.
