Okanagan experiences intense heat on Canada Day, no records broken
The Okanagan region experienced a hot Canada Day Monday, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius in Kelowna and similar highs recorded in Vernon, West Kelowna and Peachland. Despite the intense heat, the temperatures fell short of breaking any daily or all-time records for the area.
The sweltering conditions were part of a broader heat wave affecting much of southern British Columbia but did not surpass previous extremes recorded in the region. Kelowna typically sees average highs in the mid- to high 20s Celsius in early July. The 35-degree mark on Monday was significantly above average, creating challenging conditions for outdoor activities.
Residents in Vernon and West Kelowna reported comparable highs, with many feeling the heat especially in areas away from the moderating influence of Okanagan Lake. Despite the warm temperatures, thousands of residents and visitors turned out across the Okanagan to take part in Canada Day festivities.
Crowds gathered in city parks, along waterfronts and at festival grounds to enjoy live music, food vendors and family-oriented activities. Many sought refuge from the sun in shaded areas, frequently hydrating to cope with the heat.
