Province urges wildfire caution in Okanagan ahead of Canada Day

As Canada Day approaches, emergency officials are reminding Okanagan residents and visitors to stay alert as wildfire risk remains high throughout the region.
With warm, dry conditions continuing across the Interior, the province is urging people in Vernon, Kelowna, West Kelowna Lake Country and Peachland to follow local fire restrictions, have an emergency plan in place, and stay informed.
“British Columbia continues to face prolonged drought in many regions,” the province said in a statement this week. “Below-average precipitation is contributing to increased wildfire and water supply concerns.”
The BC Wildfire Service said open burning is prohibited in many areas, and those planning campfires are urged to follow local rules, avoid windy conditions and never leave a fire unattended. Officials also recommend having a grab-and-go emergency bag ready, reviewing insurance policies for wildfire protection, and creating a profile with Emergency Support Services.
