‘No changes coming’: B.C. RCMP bust school zone rumour

Jun 26, 2025 | 11:26 AM

You may have seen claims online that school zones across Canada will be enforced 24/7 starting July 1st.

That’s not true, according to the B.C. RCMP.

B.C. Highway Patrol says the rumour is being spread by unreliable websites and boosted by social media and AI.

“Traffic laws are a provincial matter. There are no nationwide changes coming,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin in a media release.

In B.C., the school zone speed limit of 30 km/h applies on regular school days between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., unless signs say otherwise.

Drivers are reminded to double-check their sources.

Big changes to traffic laws will always come from your provincial government, not random posts online.

For accurate info, head to ICBC or the Ministry of Transportation.
