Massive housing needs for Central Okanagan by 2041

There’s a massive need for housing units in the Central Okanagan in the next 15 years.

So says a report to the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) board showing almost 64,000 more housing units are needed as the population expands by around 50 per cent since 2021.

An undersupply of rental housing and an aging population with no existing supportive housing developments planned are among the challenges.

The Central Okanagan is expected to grow to over 141,000 households from 94,000 by 2041. That’s an increase of almost 47,000 households, over a 20-year time period.

However, the report says a further 15,000 homes are needed to address issues such as homelessness and to meet a 3-percent vacancy rate.
